Each year, I post my reading list along with those books I personally enjoyed or was challenged by the most. In 2023, in addition to reading some outstanding books, terrible books, and everything in-between, I was also able to publish my third book with The Good Book Company: ‘Faithfully Present: Embracing the Limits of Where and When God Has You’ along with write my fourth: ‘Honour‘ as part of the ‘Love Your Church’ series (available July 1, 2024).

With our church taking 4.5 months to teach through the book of Revelation this year, most of my reading and study during that time was laser-focused to that subject. So I didn’t read quite as many books as I had hoped to. That said, I was extremely encouraged to both read and endorse “You’re Not Crazy: Gospel Sanity for Weary Churches” by Ray Ortlund & Sam Allberry. It was without a doubt the most important book I read this year, one that I am sure I will revisit often in the years to come.

As for novels, this year was one of Wendell Berry binging. I had read a handful of his books before; but ended up reading nearly all of them in 2023. Berry has a unique gift for grounding you in a place and humanising you. And I for one, need that. But the best novel I read this year (and maybe ever?), was “Island of the World” by Michael D. O’Brien. How this book is not more widely known is beyond me. It was gripping, poetic, devastating, and utterly beautiful. I cannot wait to read it again!

With all that said, here are my Top 10 Non-Fiction books and Top 10 Novels from 2023:
